square of earth - II

Square of Earth

In ancient Chinese cosmology the earth was symbolised by a square and heaven by a circle.  Each of these four pieces ( 'corner songs' I call them) in the ‘Square of Earth’ represent an emotional variation on the theme of my leaving Beijing after living there 13 years to return to New Zealand. They also reflect my taking the moods of any leaving as simply a rehearsal for the great final departure.

 Square of Earth – II

this is the corner song of tenderness

    cold garden

yet seeing
the courtyard
this morning
low pines
cypresses
squares of hedge
a safe darkened
green in the
cold winter rain
the split shining
bark of the
ornamental
peach
shed of its
leaves an
autumn ago
soft baubles
of gum bled
out on
black cuts
i felt close
as i should
to this earth
underpinning
all my mad
comings and
goings upon
it a snail
out there
on the bricks
weathering
the storm
of the sky
below its
foot.
know myself
drawing my
leaving
my pain
upon
it.
